for those who travel by train

It depends on the train company and the type of bike you have.

Generally you may not take a full-size non-folding bike on a train during peak hours (6am - 10am and 3pm - 7pm on Weekdays), but you may carry a folding bike.

it would be a sunday evening journey from brighton back to cardiff @ 5-30pm

Need to check the train company. Some insist on reserving space (Virgin springs to mind); others you can reserve or take your chances (Cross Country - 3 spaces most trains, 2 only are reservable); others couldn't care less (FGW with the guard's carriage, etc).
