.
1. To rend or tear apart.
2. To break into pieces, as by a blow; cleave or split asunder.
3. To break or distress (the spirit, for example).

HTH (I think it is a northern phrase. Hence unintelligible in deepest Sussex.)

Norvern monkey speak, innit. The swearing seemed (a) the same in norvern and cheery southern tones and (b) equally effective in releasing the jammed chain.

Well I wasn't going to ride back was I?. I told myself and everyone else that would listen that I just wasn't feeling it.. but I felt guilty...my legs said no, my mind said no and they told me no the whole night. But after 2 of the most excellently cooked and served full brekkies, 4 mugs of tea and the voices of @Tim Hall and @robjh asking if I was riding back. I just couldn't help myself. Doh! But so glad I did, after a little trouble trying to find the road to the Devils Dyke. We were soon zooming along at a wind assisted rate of knots and I was home just after 1.30pm.

So thanks @Flying Dodo and @velovoice for organising such a brilliant ride. Even though you couldn't keep the drizzle away, thanks for keeping the night time temperatures on the nicer side of comfortable.

Just had a couple of hours kip and copious amounts of more tea.
Loved it.. top, top ride. 133 miles on the clock.

You know you wanted to really. We just did you a favour. It was a great ride back and much of it new to me. The ride over Devil's Dyke was inspired (and who thought we would have seen so much of Brighton's suburbs to get there?), and the quiet lanes north to Handcross made a great route for the first half of the journey.
When I first heard the idea of riding from Crawley to Croydon on the A23 and mixing it with 60mph motor traffic I thought it sounded slightly crazy, but soon realised it was a stroke of genius, and with wind behind us @ianrauk and I got 20 miles of mostly top-gear riding, though he started to drop me on the hills by Merstham.
I peeled off at Purley, and with lots of time before my train to Cambridge I went to look round Sutton where I went to school. It's changed....
Anyway, shortly after at St Helier I heard a loud crack, and a rear spoke had snapped, leaving the wheel badly warped and unrideable. A quick review showed me it wasn't going to be a roadside repair job, but by releasing the back brakes I managed to limp at 5mph on to Tooting station and continued by train. I made it home as planned at 5 o'clock, and have now had a couple of hours' sleep.

It was a great ride and a great night, in fact in my limited experience all that a Fridays rde should be. Other people have already described many of the good things, so I will restrict myself here to a big thankyou to @Flying Dodo and @velovoice for leading and organising as well as the others who help to make this and other rides run so smoothly.

Arrived last at breakfast. Ate. Rode to Brighton. Train to Three Bridges. Picked up by The Present Mrs Mmmmartin and driven home. Ate. Slept. Woke to shocking news rhat this is, in fact, our 33rd wedding anniversary. What a great way to spend it.

Er, is this how you're supposed to celebrate 33 years of marriage? I mean, you only get 12 years for murder....

I thought to add the definition in my original post but brain wasn't working.. in this example it was in a violent attempt to tear/separate the chain from its trapped predicament. Note this is not to be confused with the Urban Dictionary definition, plus we were practicing safe as we all wore rubber (OK mine was nitrile....)
