it is going to be much more uppydowny than the usual Southend run, but, then again, there are no set piece hills like Turners Hill, let alone the Ditchling Beacon. Brentwood will be the high point.

In essence it's the first 37 miles of the Harwich route, followed by a zigzag southwards to Hadleigh and then Tattershall Gardens. I've decided that, other than Bognor, our rides don't afford us as much exposure to that great Indian import, the bungalow, and I think we can redress this deficiency between skirting Rayleigh and Hadleigh

Ah, ha! Hadleigh. Went to primary school there. The church is older than the castle you know, and well worth a stop and stare - one of only four Norman churches to have a round apse.

Is that metaphorically as well as physically?

Let's just make it metaphysical - more poetic that way.

Does this mean some of us have to leave luggage at HPC, dash back across town, have a series of frantic phone calls and then jump on a train to some East London outpost to meet up with the peloton?

Got to admire the optimism there.....

To be honest, I didn't really have any faith in Halfords. Particularly after the multiple phone calls and visits to the store. However the VN Yukon has indeed arrived and has pride of place in my garage. Ross will be able to confirm that I am not dreaming as he has seen it in the flesh.

Despite getting it on Friday I have yet to ride it yet. On Saturday Ross and I did a 100miler starting at 7am and I didn't think this was the ideal ride to be trying a new bike out. By Sunday I didn't want to look at bikes again! However, now I am itching to get on it.

excuse me! That was one of the smoothest operations you're ever likely to see. Perfect co-ordination. Peloton arrives at Gidea Park at 01.23. Train bearing Adrian reunited with wallet arrives 1.25.

That's not just slick, that's FNRttC slick!

Cool, does that mean we get to go through Thundersley, home of the Invacar?

My usual riding buddies seem to have bottled this one, so if anyone sees a big bloke on a Felt struggling up slight inclines, please shout motivational slogans at me, I've been very lax on the winter training.
