I take it you're referring to Green Lane - it was where I said to you 'I wonder if we'd gone straight on at Tinker's Hole (stop sniggering, at the back!) whether it'd bring us out there?'.

As it happens, I was wrong - but I know where you mean.

EDIT: I have this as a .tcx (and other formats) if anyone would like it. PM me an email addy and I'll send it over later today or tomorrow.

Susie's got this one taped. She has a small rucksack and somebody to carry it

I found the solution to this, a few FNRttCs ago, a specially constructed rack which self destructs a few miles into the ride, resulting in the need for someone else to carry your bag. ^_^

(... and actually, massive thanks to those who did help me on that occasion).

Five to three degrees doesn't count as cold to me, but I may have to consider digging out some gloves before the ride (I'm currently still commuting with my normal summer mitts). That's mainly because standing around waymarking, after warming up sprinting back following the inevitable mechanicals can make things a mite brisk. There's no guaranteed way to find gloves and socks that will stay dry in the rain (although that particular issue has hopefully departed now), the best solution is to carry a spare set, and swap over at the halfway point. There are those who swear by Sealskinz, but I have little experience of those.

I generally carry a spare set of Exposure Flash and Flare lights, with enough rechargeable batteries to operate them throughout the night, but that's for unpredictable emergency use, and will only work on bikes with spare space on the handlebars or seatpost, using their "rubber band" mounting arrangement. If you need to find me for those, Red is the very red bike, so generally fairly easy to spot! In the event of predicted snow or ice, I will swap over to Vince and studded tyres however. I'll also normally try and carry spare sets of AAs and AAAs for similar emergency use, if anyone finds themselves caught short!

It sounds chilly to me, especially as some spots show 2C and the wind could be approaching 15mph (fortunately not directly in our faces). I suspect there's every incentive for the tail end to keep active to keep warm, so hopefully not too much waiting around and the hills are not too bad, so hopefully not that much hanging around.

Unfortunately, that's rarely an option. When a mechanical hits, a few people deal with it, and others are stuck with just waiting around and providing occasional advice and/or bits. Even sorting things out rarely provides enough effort to provide much extra warmth, aside from pumping up tyres, and by preference I'll use CO2 cartridges to speed that up.

Trust me, the TECs don't keep the front waiting because we have a choice!

Even if it's a slow rider (and that's far rarer than mechanicals), it's normally because they've underestimated how hard the ride will be, and the incentive of going faster to warm up, won't have much impact. The only thing you can do in that case, is ramble onto them about random nonsense, so they forget how knackered they're feeling, and move a little faster (this does actually seem to work!)

I forget how much rubbish I have talked on more than one occasion to say 'how well you're doing' ' the coffee stop is not far away' 'the next hill isn't too bad' and as you say, it really helps. I just mutter to myself 'liar liar liar'

It was felt that you didn't need telling, seeing as you normally turn up disguised as a small gorilla in a zebra suit.

I thought its was commonly known I dress as a Turtle on such occasions?
