FNRttC Friday Night Ride to the Coast - Felpham near Bognor 22nd April 2011

I have received a lovely email (they are always lovely) from the great man himself. He advised me of weather conditions on Friday night and of what to bring and what not to. I then discover my name on the CC list. I can’t recall signing up and if I did so it was a mistake. I can’t make this one due to long standing Christian family commitments.

I’m bitterly disappointed. But not because I lack religious conviction or because I will be spending time with my family.

Bognor is a great ride and it looks as though the weather will be glorious. And if you have to down a beer or two while waiting for the right train, don’t forget the sun cream.

I am still getting to grips with the Garmin 800. It is great a lot of the time, but shockingly bad sometimes. Like when it suddently decided I had flown to Afghanistan and back in a matter of seconds!

Just looking at the train times and prices out of Bognor and it seems very cheap back to London. £3.70 in advance. For the first time on a FNRTTC I am not going to be heading off on a long ride home and thought I might partake of some celebratory drinks in Bognor. So I had a few questions:
1. Is there going to be any imbibing?
2. How long does in go on for?
3. Is it sensible to buy more than one £3.70 ticket. Like one for the sensible and sober leaving time of about 10am. Another for a couple of hours later and so on?

I understand from talking to people who do sit in the sun boozing and getting burnt to a cinder take in the bracing sea air after a bowl of porridgeree,
that +2 hours onwards would see people sloping away to the station... if you are lucky enough to stumble upon scintillating conversation then, of course, it may last longer! Tim O will be along in a minute to give expert 'scientific' advice.

if you're planning on imbibing then midday would be more sensible. Four o'clock in the afternoon would be completely insensible, but not unknown.

I am booked on the 10.30. Latest safest time unless your bike knows its own to the station.

I think we'll be there about 8.30 - but it depends on punctures!!!!

Go from Littlehampton. It's only 6 miles from the Cafe. And it is not very busy. You don't need a bike reservation. Jump out at Croydon and cycle home.
My plan is to cycle home as usual dependent on the time. If we are there about 8-8.30am and the weather is good then I will cycle home. Any later then I will have to get the train back. So you can have my already bought ticket if I am cycling back.

I plan to ride back to the 'Sham, slowly. Very, very, slowly indeed. I'm working on my tan.

. The only minor inconvenience is carrying the bikes over a series of stiles. That will be slightly tricky, in the dark, with 117 of us

. Of course this would be a bit more trouble for those with odd bikes, such as trikes

- and especially a recumbent trike. You would need to be a strong person to lift a recumbent trike over five stiles. You'd need both arms for that, of course. Anyone with that sort of bike - and I'm just hypothesising now of course - would need some good friends to help them with that. Of course, friends can be bought with offers of beer. everyone knows that. Not that I mean anything by this statement, I was just letting my mind wander.

They're not so much stiles as they are kissing gates - meaning that while there's no climbing over them involved, bikes still need to be lifted and passed over. Probably easiest accomplished by having a strong cyclist standing either side and passing the bike over to another similarly strong cyclist.


That's twice as many beers as you mentioned. No?
