Yup. Been on the Portland exclusively for a few weeks (Squadra had its last run on the Whitstable FNRttC, Viner when I got it back from the LBS a few days later). Not just mudguards. Professionally fitted full SKS mudguardsIt was such a pleasure when we went into Chilterns the other week with virtually everyone having proper mudguards. Of course, the weather has been so dry that, unusually for November, the roads were so clean that they were hardly needed! A couple of weeks before, in the same area, my bike had got very dirty even with them.
As a point of interest..... how many will ride road bike / MTB / other....![]()
I have even wondered about buying a faster bike, perhaps even one like Frank's, but I suspect that when I get on it, it will somehow turn out to be the same speed as other bikes I have. Funny, that. All my bikes are slower bikes. Not quite sure why.
I am looking forward to the Southend ride. I have been away from the FNRttC for quite a while. Missing a nights sleep every month seems to be incompatible with maintaining adequate reflexes to deal with a class of 30 ten year olds on a Monday morning. Seems my ageing brain needs at least 3 days to recover (if not more). But I couldn't resist the lure of the new Southend route. I used to live in Wickford and went to school in Brentwood and I have a feeling some of the journey may follow my teenage truanting routes. I am tempted to bring the bike I used back then. But it only has one gear now. Fine for most of Essex when at my best. Maybe not in the middle of the night when my legs get that 3 in the morning feeling.
