In for this one, please Simon. Sounds like an interesting venture, with the added bonus of meeting Arch!

Logistics of getting home, anyone?

Good lord, that's some pressure!

There's a fair chance* I'll try to ride back to York, after a suitable calorie stuffing session, by a shorter route than the outward, so if anyone wants to do the same, I'd be happy for the company. Might be a more pedestrian pace though.

*Well, since trikes on trains are tricky, it may be my only way to get home..

Count me in arch it looks like the only way I will get back to york, I assume part of the way will be via the selby york bike path  I will probably leave my car somewhere in york over night.

Yeah, I reckon back along the Humber north bank and up through Howden and pick up the path about Escrick. I reckon it'll be a gentle pace with every excuse for cake stops explored.

I happen to know that there's usually space to park on road in CrinklyLion's street, about a mile out of the middle of town, and about as close as you'll get and get free parking.

Should I be slightly worried that (possibly as a result of quite a lot of going out riding with the Fast Northern Boys, who are almost certainly a Bad Influence) I'd sort of already planned to ride back. But going the other way - up a bit, then back. Which, whilst not exactly hilly, is not entirely flat.....

Perhaps the York returnees could see how they feel on the day and choose which route back they do depending on how the legs feel - I'll happily take the flatter route if a guide is needed, or the more northern route if everyone feels up to it.

I once had a look at going from york to hull I was going to take the york to selby path but then I wasnt sure where to go next I had a look round tinternet and it said there was another path and it started in selby at the bridge is that right ?

Yes, I think there is. Route 66 perhaps? I haven't used it myself. It'll be marked on my up to date OS map - I've been referring to my old one tonight...

Route 65 goes from Hull all the way to York via Selby. Hull to Selby is the Trans Pennine Trail, well signed (well, once out of Hull) and from the docks is about 45 miles. Selby to Millenium Bridge, York via the rail trail is 15 miles. Signed at Selby "toll" bridge.

The only hilly bit is from Melton to Ellerker, the rest is flat.

I was thinking summat like this route back which also has the advantage that (apart from the bit from Hull to Beverley) I've ridden that way before. And I only went wrong between Beverley and Pock (on the signposted route 66) twice in the dark. The stretch past Kiplingcotes is absolutely glorious.

So 60 in total. Hmm, a bit more than I was thinking it was. If Crinkly's route is 45, I'd be tempted to join that gang. It also has the advantage that I can recreate the moment I got to Pocklington on the way back from Scarborough, and contemplated whether it would be easier to just move to Pock, than cycle the rest....

I guess it'll be down to how people's legs feel on the day, with regard to hills. As both routes are easy to follow, there's not too much planning involved.

I always think flat is better, and then remember once I'm grinding along that 'flat' doesn't allow you to freewheel, so it's more relentless.
