I´ve just got the other ticket, 9:25am with connection at Doncaster, but still 7.25 quid with a bike reservation, so no bad at all!

Advice from locals, please - suggestions for a cyclist friendly hotel in York on Saturday night. Plan is to do some sightseeing before return on Sunday evening, so would like somewhere central, comfortable, friendly and cheapish.
Thanks

Lucy,

if you feel you can trust a random stranger off the internet (some of this lot have even met me, I'm fairly trustworthy!) and depending on when you and said bike are arriving in York (because I will be going out to work somewhere around 7:30 or 8) you could maybe stash it at ours. 10 minutes ride from the station, no secure bike shed so the bikes just live in the living room  Feel free to drop me a message if it would help.

Regarding trains and how bike-friendly they are, I've found TransPennine Express to always be quite happy to take bikes without reservations. There's room for about 4-5 uprights in the dedicated cycle storage area, albeit it has flip-up seats so sometimes you need to roust whoever's decided to perch there instead of using the regular ones. Their routes don't run direct Hull-York though, instead they go through to Leeds.

I emailed Hull trains and this is what they say. They may have room for more than 3 bikes, but you will need to phone them or go to your nearest staffed station in case you cannot book them online. Hope this helps

Bicycle reservations can be made through any staffed station booking office or through our Telesales Team. Unfortunately these can not be made when booking travel tickets on line. We have 3 reservable spaces for each train, plus some spare room should these be already taken.

Copied from YACF (but please don't hold that against it/me):

This morning (after a lovely chat with CrinklyLion), I caught a fast train from York to Hull via a slightly circuitous route (Goole and Scunthorpe). The train consisted of two locomotives and a guards van. Guess which role I played

If that's too cryptic, I went on the York-Hull FNRTTC reccy with Simon and Greg. It was very windy and they set a cracking pace. The speed of the train was about what we managed last Saturday going back to Darlington (Edit to add it was a YACF ride) but the effort required was much greater and I spent very little time on the front. Sorry guys

I was flat-out most of the time.

Whinging aside, it was a cracking ride and the route is great. Add in a larger group, darkness and then dawn and I think that it will be spectacular.
The mid-ride (actually, beyond half-way
thumbsup.gif
) food people seem pleased to be catering for us and they have a grasp of what will be required so that's good.
We managed to find a rather good cafe just outside Flixborough* for a late lunch. My chilli and rice was looking rather large so I asked them to give me less. They took some off the plate and it turned out to be just the right amount. Tasty too.
Unfortunately, where we stopped was just before the hills started. They aren't steep and they aren't very long but they're there. At the top there is a cracking view of the Humber Bridge in the distance.
Once we'd reached Hull, Simon managed to find a nice little cafe/bistro that we can get breakfast at. Apparently they will also open the bar for us 'though Adrian et al might have to wait until 10.00. Actually, sod that, I'm also going to be hanging around for a few this time.
I don't know if they have a TV (or if they serve decent beer). If not, there's a Wetherspoon's across the road and I'm sure that we'll be able to watch the rugby there.
I made the York-Hull distance 74 miles although that includes going to the Minster from the station plus a definite and a possible missed turn.

I last saw Simon discussing bike spaces at Hull Station. His booked train (for which he had a bike reservation) had been cancelled so he was getting a later one. There were at least 3 bikes already on when he boarded.....

It's worth bearing in mind that Hull is near the end of the Trans-Pennine Trail so there could be other cyclists getting the train home. There were two on my train. If you're doing the ride, make sure you get bike reservations and don't rely on the goodwill of TPE.
This Public Information was brought to you by "Concerned of Chorlton".

Total distance with to-ing and fro-ing was 85 miles.

*Flixborough, Nypro plant exploding and killing lots of people was what I remembered from seeing it on the TV. Wiki says 28 killed, 36 seriously injured in a cyclohexane explosion. It happened on a Saturday. If it had been a weekday, hundreds could have died.

Cracking ride report there, Andrew.

I caught the Northern train back from Hull to York this afternoon. There were up to five bikes at a time in the bike space and they were all allowed on, although I think the conductor tried to dissuade the fifth guy before letting him on because he was only travelling a couple of stops. With some clever stacking and a bike in a disabled space somewhere, you needn't worry about catching a train back to York.

If you do miss out on a space, feed beer, coffee and clenbutarol to someone who knows the way and persuade them to guide you back to York the short way, which is something approximating last year's route. If it's me, we may even do a 'cracking' pace if you like. Basically, I don't think anyone need worry about trains.

It can be a problem if there are prams and/or wheelchairs and/or awkward gits with lots of luggage.
Don't ask me how I know this

I'm going back to Manchester and I already have bike reservations so drugs won't be required. However, if you have some spare............

recce a great success - with thanks to Greg and Andrew - without Greg we'd probably have taken a good deal longer. It was great to see Kat.

This ride is really subject to the wind. If we have a strong wind from the southsoutheast, as we did yesterday, it will be tough going. If we have a southwesterly, as we were promised, it will be a delight.
Return journey less so - Hull Trains are clearly in trouble, and I didn't get back to London until 9pm. I found out that every Hull Trains departure this week had been cancelled!

The route is pan flat for all but about seven miles. The roads are good, although I'll have to warn people about the left side of the B1228 toward Howden. The pub at halfway is modest, but neat, and there's lots of room. The cafe/bistro place is going to be great. The proprietor really wants us there! (Shaun I'll e-mail you about the other place). All in all I'm really looking forward to it (other than dealing with Hull Trains)

From today's note at Nationalrail.co.uk:

A shortage of serviceable trains has resulted in First Hull Trains operating an amended timetable today.

The following trains will not run:

  • 08:25 Hull to London Kings Cross
  • 11:48 London Kings Cross to Hull
  • 17:10 Hull to London Kings Cross
The following alterations will be made:

  • 15:10 Hull to London Kings Cross will start at Selby
  • 13:48 London Kings Cross to Hull will terminate at Selby
  • 20:30 London Kings Cross to Hull will start at Doncaster
First TransPennine Express services will call additionally at Howden as required. Passengers may use East Coast services between London Kings Cross and Doncaster as close to the original time of travel as possible.

there's a kind of railway 'omerta' in play here. I had plenty of time to ask questions on the way back (the Northern train I was put on to broke down.....) and people clammed up - except for my informant who said that I would be welcome back on East Coast any time!
