Hear Hear with the earlier comment about wind in the woods. And generally speaking, off road riding is not so dependent upon speed, so wont be so effected by any sort of bad weather. I have recently included an mtb to my stable and found that freedom that was also mentioned in an earlier post. Road riding seems to be very hung up on distance and speed, where as with off roading, I just ride for the pleasure of it. I've never been an out and out road rider, but since rediscovering the saddle about 6 years ago, I had only ridden a road based hybrid. I was constantly measuring my performance against my previous rides, averages and distances. With my off road adventures, all I worry about is trying out new routes, enjoying the same routes in different seasons, and seeing how I can overcome obstacles in different ways. All the nonsense about performance goes out the window. And that's where the feeling of freedom comes from.
