On a more positive note vis-à-vis traffic calming, I have noticed that sinusiodal humps (less jarring for cyclists) have started to replace a number of the traditional round topped humps on my commute.

Those things are bolted to the floor, they make quite a mess when they're removed. I've seen it happen where I work, they don't bother renewing the blocks underneath so they have holes in them where the bolts used to be.

I've not read the daily wail article but looking at those pictures it seems a bit excessive!
I skimmed it, but after the first sentence about "it is generally agreed that speed humps are a good way of slowing down cars" (or similar), I was so busy trying to reconcile that with the usual "it's OK to speed in your car and any measures taken against that are unfair to the law abiding motorist" stance taken by the tabloids that my head exploded.

I didn't venture into the comments ..

The Daily Mail article conflates it with the issue about liability. The subtext appears to me to be: "Look, here is proof that these nasty cyclists are more dangerous than us poor put upon motorists, yet they want to blame us if we hit them." ;)

A full susser will fly over them.

Oh beleive me I could get the cyclocross bike flying over those no trouble and at speed if I had ever wanted to. Its the noncyclist that ended up with the burden here sadly.

Agreed, It must be murder if you are in a wheel chair or have a baby buggy.

It would certainly stop cyclist (even with sussers) but having now seen the images, I think its extreme beyond reason

It's in Islington. The borough that has spent more on cycle facilities than any other. And has bred a class of cyclist that is an embarrassment to us all

I used to drink there a long time ago when it was a regular bit of London, proper boozers, now it's ghastly

that photo exploits the telephoto shortened perspective effect, however, there's still a lot of speed humps no matter what way you look at it. I wonder how much they cost compared with, say, a properly kerbed cycle path to one side?
