One of the foaming-mouth rants inspired me to find (and post) stats on pedestrian deaths by vehicle type. I thought I'd add it here as well, as a handy cut-n-paste reference when the next time that old chestnut about rampaging cyclists slaughtering pedestrains comes up again.

Pedestrian deaths in 2008 from collision with a single vehicle:

Pedal Cycle .........................1
Motor cycle under 50cc..........0
Motor cycle over 50cc..........15
Car..................................332
Bus or coach.......................35
LGV...................................27
HGV...................................62
Other.................................17

Thanks Liz.

I'm convcerned about the 17 'other'... Boat, Rocket, Tank, Go-Kart?

Horses, quads, trikes & tractors come to mind immediately.

Well that's weird.

Yesterday's post never showed up, so I reposted again this evening.

I also made another post responding to a comment by one of the Mail's finest.

The second post showed up immediately, but the second stats post is also missing from the "unmoderated" comments

I don't think the Mail wants inconvenient facts disturbing their readers' cosy cocoon of ignorance

They certainly don't let inconvenient facts get in the way of their usual rants stories, why should your facts be any different...

They seem to get used to certain user accounts on there too. It does come across as a concerted effort to hide the facts... infact I would go so far as to say that the majority of those raving like lunatics about cyclists wont actually bother seeking out the relevant info, and neither will they listen to any official government body telling them this. Such is their paranoia:wacko:

My stats turned up today, so paranoia unfounded.

I included a link to the source which has been replaced with a text reference, so I wonder if anything with a link goes to a human moderator to check it's not dodgy.

Sorry Daily Mail for assuming the worst
