Yup that was the problem. When it came to refresh the route it would lock up. Garmin never really acknowledged the problem despite all the complaints on the Garmin forums and have never issued a fix.

It's a shame they wouldn't concentrate on getting their existing devices to work perfectly instead of bringing out yet more new ones. Puts you off buying any of their newest devices until they have been out for several months and you can read the reviews.
They do have a habit of Beta testing products on the paying public.
But saying that I have had a 200, 205 & 305 and they have worked flawlessly, just the 500 that doesn't. so I'm not going to dismiss Garmins GPS machines out of hand because when they do work well, they work very well. When it comes to upgrade I will almost certainly by other Garmin products. One of the reasons being their customer services and support is top notch.

Can't complain about my 200 either. It has worked perfectly and in all weathers and when I bought it they were doing the £30 cashback thing so I think it only cost about £70.

It never locked up as such, it was just sluggish on the refresh, I currently have a Rider 20 for recording its a great little bit of kit (ant+) but its limited on display, I like to have cad,hrz,tm,dist, current speed is not really important any more, the R20 however can only show 3 fields at anyone time and always speed, unless on autoscroll and I dont like that.
I am trying to get enough to get a 2nd hand 705 off ebay, though R50 is a possibility, been trying to find out if it will take a tcx course file made in say rwgps it should by uploading to bryton and then transfer to the unit ( I have already done the tcx bit to bryton), I just dont know what info is display on the unit like are the turn by turn imported, because I dont like the bryton mapping.

I picked up my edge 200 for £80, and my edge 500 for £90. I have to say that I prefer the 500 over the 200 because I try to keep track of my cadence rate which the 500 allows me to. Its a shame the device can't get my elevation correct - houses levitating whilst it is has gone to sleep during lunch (etc), but the refresh issues do see to be improved with the new version of the garmin connect website and the garmin express (though my 500 still routinely re-installs the timezone update every time I connect it!) and for the first time ever, my garmin 500 now tells me the time remaining to the end of a course (since the new website & Garmin express) something it never did previous. Refresh is sluggish at times, but much improved over previous, thankfully

@SatNavSaysStraightOn I could get it to do time to end if there were no way points as such otherwise it was time to next way point.

nah - mine has never ever shown me a time to get of course until this new software.... so there's at least one improvement and the website does seem to be working again. Just plotted out tomorrows 105km ride to my grandfather's and back and it didn't crash or lose the course! things are looking up. Now if only I could program it not to make houses levitate!
