Think it's time I had a new helmet. I've found a Giro Athlon and a Specialized echelon. The giro is a tenner more expensive. Any one got any thoughts on whether it's worth it?
Also, i have a small head - would the small fit me?
thanks!

Can you not try them on and see which you prefer/fits you better ?

I have an Echelon and I have found it fine. It suited my size and shape of head. Can't comment on the Giro but I am sure it is a good helmet. The main difference with the price point is size and weight, the more you spend the lighter the helmet. My view would be try both helmets and see which fits you best and decide from there.

If you aren't going to try before you buy, then don't bother buying. If it doesn't fit, it'll be useless so save your money.

You could try at a shop and either price match or then buy online. My helmet was bought online but I tried the type at a well known cycle retailer first.:thumbsup:

If you are interested in its potential protective effects then the Specialized has probably been tested to the higher Snell standard and the Giro hasn't.........but matters of fashion usually seem to over-ride such considerations.

Fair point, but if it doesn't stay on your head in an accident then it doesn't really matter much what it would have done if it did ...

FWIW I've gone Bell>Specialized>Giro>Specialized, mainly because in the handful of years I've had each helmet, each manufacturer's changed their sizes/shapes in the interim, and their latest offerings just didn't fit as well...

I bought a Snell tested Spesh helmet after smashing an old cheap Giro in a freak accident a few years back. Spent ages researching helmet safety whilst recuperating. But I got fixated on the safety standard and didn't pay enough attention to the fit when it came to buying. I wore the Spesh for about 6 months but it never felt as snug as the Giro. So I'm back in Giro helmets again these days.

So my advice is - if a Spesh helmet fits you and it's in your price range, go for that over anything else you're considering.

I have a Spesh and a Giro. Both fit me fine, although the Spesh is definitely better. I've tried a number of other brands when I've been in shops and none of them have fitted as well as Giro or Spesh.
