I have rebuilt an older roadbike with friction downtube shifters, and fitted the chain and gear cables this morning. I wanted to thread the chain big front to small at the back to get the length right so to make it easy I connected the front mech cable to allow me to move the mech over the big chainwheel. It all went smoothly and only took a few minutes to fit the cable and join the chain. Then I came to fit the rear derailleur cable but was unable to get it positioned correctly under the bottom bracket to run along the chain stay. It actually took me a few minutes to realise I had put the front cable on the right hand lever and was trying to fit the rear derailleur cable on the left hand lever.

When I consider how many times on so many bikes I have fitted new cables and have never had that problem before I am seriously considering at 67 years old the current state of my mental acuity.

I would not worry your self unduly @compo because I think once you sort of get "past" 55 one's mental state is well enough said, like popping down the "co-op" for well if you could remember (this is something I do quite often lol) or walking into bike shop for here I go again was it brake blocks or what.So getting cables mixed up ain't so bad after all lol.

My better half was looking for her glasses this morning, despite the fact that she was wearing them.

I have the smart phone, as I am not so smart myself nowadays. Calendar, lists, and text messages help keep me on the straight and narrow path. It seems like I am not so addled, and that I am also tech-savvy when I use it. I just have to remember to take it along, and keep it charged. Of course, sailing around on a bicycle helps keep me active and sharp, and keeps the blood flowing to the useful areas of the brain.
