Going to start brewing 40 pints of Porter today, get them on stream before my current stock runs out. Fortunately I use yeast for my bubbles, so no issues for me.

Actually, there's a thought. Perhaps soft drink manufacturers could use yeast to carbonate their drinks? It'd sort out the high sugar content!

Proper beer doesn't have CO2 added so it's only larger that's at risk isn't it ?

I don't know how mass produced beer is made. For my DIY brewing I use yeast for secondary fermentation, and vary the amount of sugar and the length of time to control carbonation. My lovely Pilsner is every bit as fizzy as pub bought pith.

I am deeply shocked to discover that John Smith's is not naturally carbonated.

Most bottled and canned beers have CO2 added.
