Haven't seen that one. I hear the weapons drill is impeccable.

You might not be a fan of CGI but you have to admit this is pretty amazing stuff. The "bear" was a guy in a blue suit suitably padded and the bear images added afterwards:

Thank you for letting me know about this. Having now watched it I can say that this is an excellent film with some stunning acting and cinematography that really evokes the spirit of the tale.

Unfortunately when it comes to history it's about as accurate as 300. The real Hugh Glass was much more of a badass than portrayed in the film.

Yes, Glass lived amongst the Pawnee for a few years (no evidence of a Pawnee wife or a mixed-race son), yes, there was a fur trading mission that got attacked by the Arikara tribe (a.k.a. the Ree), yes he got mauled by a bear, and was left for dead by Fitzgerald and Bridges. That's about all the film gets right. Everything else? Made up.

I recommend reading up on him, or listening to The Dollop Episode 5. (contains swears, actual story starts at 4 minutes in)

Speaking of visceral action scenes:

I never could understand why Keith David's character didn't just put on the glasses, preferring instead to get into a fight with a professional wrestler.

the final fight scene from one of the many Zatoichi films. I think this one is Zatoichi Challenged from 1967

There are dozens of these films about the eponymous blind samurai, and they are all incredibly well crafted a d acted films giving Kurosawa a run for his money despite being churned out in some quantity for a presumably modest budget
