This pundit needs to realise he's possibly being listened to by thousands of people. If he wants to make manly, cool and derogative comments in his own home then that's fine, but to do it on TV is stupid. This has far greater meaning than "just" saying handbag on TV. Attitudes to women and indeed to other people in general are still deep in the gutter among a lot of blokes. This was the main reason I was unhappy that my stepson went and watched football matches aged 9. Hearing tripe like this is not a good start for an aspiring young man.

Yes, call me a prude or a snob, but having visited a lot of male-dominated trade outlets in recent weeks, the level of respect and cutomer service shown to me was abysmal. And I think it's all to do with young boys/men hearing tripe like I've just explained, coming out the mouths of people they look up to, like football pundits, and thinking it's ok to be a nobber. They think this "Jack the lad" aggresive humour is manly and cool, and to be honest it makes me sick.

When I grew up wearing a dress did define a gender, well didn’t define but differentiated if that’s the right thing, well you know what I mean. Girls wore a dress and boys pants/shorts. Anyway that was 30 odd years ago
30 boiler rats, overall wearing spanner monkeys or lads that work in boilers of power stations. Man camp is the accommodation in some African, Middle East sites. Small metal huts on site that you live in. Snap cabin- mess room

My son is very well brought up and respects both men and women and has strong female role models in his life, not only at school but in extra curricular activities too. I have heard and been on the receiving end of some harsh tongue from female welders that would make the politically correct police squirm.

- try turning up at the trades counter of all sorts of places where its supposedly 'manly tough guys only' -

- and not happening to be their idea of a what a customer of theirs should look like.

Its very boring - but if you pull them up on it - then you're being 'humourless' or worse .

I phoned up to hire a telehandler one time - and got asked in a deeply patronising manner what* i required it for ?? (love)

I get reports of same from other women in (supposedly) trad male trades - But we're meant to just laugh it off whilst inwardly groaning ??

I know for a fact - because they've told me - that it undermines many young women's confidence before they even get started - having to overcome that invisible hurdle of having to prove themselves, as worthy of being there - and that must be holding a lot of them back.

Maybe thats what the 'blokey' blokes want - to keep it all in their 'club' ??

Or is there a degree of fragile male ego at play here ??

Not sure about the fragile male ego. Seems more and more women in the power industry, they make very good fitters as they seem to have more patience, more methodical and less grrrrr hit it with a hammer. I am told women make the best welders too.
The old guys I know just welcome them, happy to pass on knowledge and treat them the same. Likewise the women behave just the same

Exactly - but its not 30 years ago - we have progressed ( well some of us have) - my eldest son is nearly 30 himself ..

And I've met loads of middle eastern gentlemen - who are - for all and intents and purposes wearing dresses...

I wouldn’t call it a dress to them though unless wishing to cause huge offence. Indeed we have progressed but in other areas I feel regressed.

An audience of 30 or thousands should make no difference should it ? That would be like saying, project an image to he masses but behind the microphone say what every you please....... I think a few of them would very likely not change manner or tone regardless of who is around

Yes i have noticed same vis a vis females using some brain rather than just pure brawn to address a tricky mechanical problem -

And definitely many older gentlemen are very good and patient teachers of these skills - in fact that's who i had to learn from - at the time there were no female teachers of such subjects.

Shame that so many generations of perfectly capable women were held* back for so many centuries - and were endlessly told -
"These jobs are not for you - get back in the kitchen / nursery "
