Francesca, you have my sympathy for having become involved in a helmet thread so soon after joining CC. This topic has raised forthright posting on cycle forums over many years! Few people are concerned about what others wear or don't wear off road. The concern of many on here is that government may call for compulsory helmet wear for on-road cyclists. The jury is still out regarding the beneficial effects for the population as a whole if compulsion were to come about. In other countries where compulsion has been imposed, the numbers of people cycling have fallen, but there has been no measurable improvement in head injury rates. There is a 'safety in numbers' aspect whereby other road users become more used to looking out for cyclists as cyclist numbers increase, this safety factor reduced if the number of cyclists on the road reduces. There is also 'risk compensation' whereby a cyclist feels safer with a helmet and takes less care thus increasing risk of accident. There are other factors too, but I hope this little note goes some way to explaining some of the 'high octane' posts in this thread.
We are a friendly lot really, it's just that helmets bring out some strong views both for and against.

Yebbut what % started off with impairment?

It's a study of two halves and to be honest, we don't know yet.
