I'm hoping it won't cost so much to fix up.
I've searched online to see if you can save a rusted chain and it's doable. As long as it isn't too severe.
I'm gonna have a better look tomorrow and post some photos in the bike repair part of this site if it will let me.
You could get a book such as Zen and the art of mountain bike maintenance. It will set you on the right path to fix it up at lowest cost possible.
I wouldn't spend much on it. Just get it running. I friend of mine 'turns round' bikes like this all the time, picks them up for free or very low cost, fixes them, and punts on for a small profit. He spends very little, and will often use bikes for spares only.
I've taken some photos. Hope they're clear enough.
What do you think?
I'm hoping I can save most of the parts. It's for myself so not looking to make a profit.
I'll be happy with spending £100 as it was free.
You could buy something better and in working order for £100.
But he's going to learn things this way.

I'll have a look on eBay, thanks.
