When I was with PPG B&M were playing Johnstones paint off against Crown. Crown reacted to Johnstones discounting prices by changing the formulation of their paint to meet a price point - particularly their 10l whites. Crown made huge quantities of this specifically for B&M but were burned when B&M discovered the drop in quality and chucked them out. Now B&M play Dulux and Johnstones off against each other. It's a big market - the profits from the paint aisle of a B&M covers the wages of the entire store.

However, the small hardware stores have been hammered by this price war. Quite often their price for paint is only pennies less than B&M are selling it for.

Walked out.
How much cheaper do you want them?
Just the full range in one place, I presume.

I'm talking branded goods here.
Regular prices......not special offers
Home Bargains seem to be doing very well and expanding.
They have good quality displays and decent staff.
Products (IMO) are not near sell by dates.
Some examples.........
Pack of Cheddars at HBs £0.99.....Sainsburys just under £2.00
Argan shampoo HBs £0.99.....double at Sainsburys.
Kronenburg lager........considerably cheaper at HB.
Lots of other examples.
Not slagging other supermarkets. Just wondering how HBs can do it.
Maybe they're just taking very little profit on the branded goods.

I learned last week just how low the profit margins at Aldi are on their groceries, with some items being loss leaders. Cheap food gets punters in through the doors, and impulse buys from the specials tables is where the profits come from.
