rh100 - I'm with you in theory, but the kind of elderly pcs I'm likely to get off ebay for a song tend to have very pricey RAM, which rather defeats the object.
Incidentally, I've bought RAM off ebay before now and it's been fine. It's like anything else, you checkout the feedback and send an email or two - get a feel for who you're dealing with. You can save a fair bit, particularly with 'old' RAM.
