Strange......that site lists it as being silver but it was actually white (with a fair amount of rust)
that is the vehicle age, not the year the plate was first issued. 1972 should be a year specific identifier. I think 72 should be a J or K? That plate is older than the car by a good few years.1972

No, they didn't, but it should still be possible to calculate when the plate was first registered.I'm not sure those old style plates had a year attached to them?
