Just a thought from the Turkey for 12 thread:
If you roast a bird or piece of meat in an oven, how come, if you cook a pie or cake in the same oven, it's called baking? surely roasting should be when you hold a piece of meat in front of an open fire or red-hot electric heater?

So where does roasting fit in?
Hmmmmmmmmmmm? { Scratches head}.
My best guess is that roasting is just grilling but with the added application of fat, juices, and general stuff. Also, that roasting has become alarmingly "static" with the development of the oven rather than the spit.
I'm making this up as I go along, and I do apologise. Any chefs hereabouts?
