how do you know if it is an ESP mech?

looking for some grip shifts for a bike i am building on the cheap. some say only work with esp, how do you know?

These Sram items with numbers (3.0, 5.0, 7.0, 9.0, X-7, X-9 etc.) are ESPs, those with names (Attack, MRX (?) etc.) are Shimano-compatible.

And if you compare the numbers shown for the gears on different gripshift types, the distance between the numbers on an ESP-GS is twice as large of a Sh.-GS.

Btw. some Suntour derailleurs can be used both ways.
