A lawyer has agreed to take on the case of a woman who mowed down and killed a young cyclist and wants to sue the victim and his family for his death!

You really shouldn't be blaming the lawyer, he (or she) is only acting on the instructions of his client. The woman driver is the one who deserves our bile. Pretty disgusting.

I wouldn't blame the lawyer as much if his/her work was for free. (S)he is acting on the instructions of the client with the expectations of making a handsome financial return from his/her despicable actions.

The other sad thing about this case is that if she wins it will open the floodgates for suing anyone who was in an accident, so no longer will you just get ran over crossing the road , you will have to pay the person who ran you over.

Despite what the UK journalists would have us believe, the US - and in this case, Canadian - civil courts are no dafter than ours, just different. One difference is that the loser does not automatically pay the costs of the winner, so quite a few cases get filed which are then thrown out at the first hearing.

And if the driver was wholly without fault (which seems unlikely on the facts as reported, although journos do very very occasionally get things wrong), she would rightly be entitled to compensation. There have been several cases in the UK successfully brought by car drivers and train drivers who have been traumatised by having people commit suicide in front of their vehicles.
