How many of you stick to the speed limit while driving??

M6 J36 up to not too far South of Glasgow is lightly trafficked most times and at certain times is damn nigh deserted.

Amazing - we have members who have never, not once in their whole life, or if they did once don't now, exceed the speed limit by not even an incy wincy little bit.

I truly find that very hard to believe.

Now, what would you do if you had to get a loved one to hospital in an emergency? Stick to the limit or justify breaking the law because something is important to you?

My mum was a midwife in the 80s... she used to regularly get stopped going to home deliveries [after being called out by panicking dad-to-be] by policemen in panda cars hiding in junctions for drunk drivers passing by. They used to then offer to give her a blues and twos escort to the address.... much more fun than sitting in the dark half the night. She had to follow these panda cars through the centre of Leeds going as fast as she could to keep up. She loved it! Probably highly unethical mind.

[Edit: there were a few times when she wasn't going to an emergency though but was 'just' speeding, when she had to pretend to be in a hurry....]

Sitting in the middle land 'because the inside lane is for trucks and I'm in a car' is just bad driving.
It doesn't matter if you're within the limits, regardless of this you have to return to the inside lane unless overtaking.

On the M1 (for example) this can be quite hard because of the number of trucks, but on roads like the M40 it's unforgivable...

I find that quite incredible too. A completely empty three lanes ahead, and they "process" sedately down the middle one. It's almost as though driving in the inside lane is only for losers.

I'm getting better at observing speed limits; in my 20's my right foot had only two positions, full on the gas or off. Luckily my reduced budget meant the only cars I could afford had a 0-60 time of eventually. In my 30's pretty much the same, but with bigger engines and a better brakes. Now in my 40's and with a kid, I'm right on the limit in school zones (20mph in the US), ok'ish around town as I go with the flow. Yet the flow in general always speeds unless a police car is in view, for example often 40-45 in a 35mph zone. On the motorways or highways, as fast as I can get away with which is usually about 85-90mph, but I'll nudge +100 every now and then just for old times sake.

This one really bursts my head too. I don't think any of them realise the other problem they are causing when they dawdle along at less than 55mph in the middle lane. HGVs are electronically limited to 55mph (even though the speed limit for HGVs on a motorway is 60 ) and we are not allowed in the right hand lane where there are 3 or more lanes; THAT is why we pull out and flash you! But then that only works if you actually bother to look in your mirror occassionally, so no chance of seeing that, then. Then you wonder why you get "undertaken". Luckily, that is allowed by the highway code, depending on your interpretation of rule 268:

Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right.

This is one of my pet hates. I DESPISE people who stick to the middle lane even when, or especially when, the inside lane is completely clear. These people are actually reducing the capacity of the motorway to two lanes and are a major factor in motorway congestion. I get the strong impression there's a belief in some quarters that the lanes really are called 'fast' and 'slow' and as they think themselves to be neither, they drive in the middle one! Even giving them a courteous demonstration of what they SHOULD be doing - from inside lane into middle lane, into outside lane, passing the miscreant in the middle lane and pulling into your rightful place in the inside lane ahead of them tends to fail to elicit the appropriate response - them pulling into the inside lane. They plod on gormlessly looking incredibly stupid.

I think these drivers should be forced to drive yellow cars and wear a hat at all times

Motorways? Horses for courses but I limit myself to 85 maximum and if driving SWMBO car, as I don't own one, use the cruise control set to 82 mph or thereabouts as much as possible.

Back in the days when the throttle hand rather than foot was in control three figures were common on NSL dual carriageways and motorways. Never had a speeding ticket (before or) since passing my test in 1977 though but had 142mph recorded on two wheels a track day.

He's right too. Whether you like it or not 70mph is 70mph. You can't argue against his position without condoning law breaking.

yes you can - regardless of what speed he is doing, he should always keep to the left. He was blowing off about sitting in lane 3 and enjoying seeing the queue of cars behind him.
Personally, when I encounter pensioners like him driving like that, I just undertake

Also, when encountering a middle lane moron on an open motorway, I will continue at the same speed in lane 1 and undertake. I think that might even be legal, but even if it's not, these people need to be shaken up a bit

There should be signs like the 'Tiredness Can Kill' ones telling people to keep left, and a national advertising campaign like the clunk click ones
