The reviews of Katie Price and Peter Andre's "A whole new world" are priceless (I've probably posted this before, but always worth a quick read)

Take a balanced view, some people's expectations are far too high, some people are easily pleased, some will kick off like an atom bomb for the tiniest infringement...read enough of them and if you find the middle ground is ok...then all is well.

As an example, I remember one reviewer here incandescently proclaiming how he wouldn't use blah blah ever again because they messed his order up. It seemed pretty OTT to me and asked when this happened...6 months ago he replied. Jesus, I couldn't get THAT angry at the time of a problem, let alone 6 months later.
Filter out both extremes, you'll find somewhere near the real exoerience.

There is of course this classic from Amazon too

It all started with reviews of a fleece wolf picture jacket didn't it.

in terms of real online reviews, I tend to try a couple of different review sites or sales outlets to try and get a flavour from more than one that might be subject to spoofing or a bad batch of something skewing things. Generally when I've bought something after reading reviews, I've found them to match pretty well with my experience, on that basis, poor reviews do influence me to look elsewhere.

Don't pay too much attention, unless they're all negative with 1-2 stars.
Rented a lovely house in Portugal a few years ago, tried to book for next Hol but unavailable. Rented the house next door based on reviews. BIG mistake, a total dump!! so much so we moved out and rented another house down the road (at our own cost).
Put our own review on the website, which mysteriously disappeared, to be replaced by glowing reviews (from the owner).
Same with our new windows and doors (only good review allowed).

Odd how they want your honest opinion, good or bad, but post/ leave a bad one and it doesn't seem to hang around long.

The owner of the b'n'b I stayed in last weekend told me he and a couple of fellow owners have had guests demand a discount at the threat of posting a poor review on trip advisor.

His policy is to tell such people to eff off, but it tells you all you need to know about reviews.

I've heard about that. It happens quite a lot apparently. One can only hope karma takes care of such scum.

I can't recall where it was now but last year when I was looking at B&Bs online for my Mum, there was one advertising as being a fine Georgian building with all original features. One of the reviews complained that it was too old-fashioned and the building looked like it was hundreds of years old...
