Looking at some of the sites on line it seems they charge for the pitch regardless of if I have a car with 5 people or just me and a a small one man tent...which could make things expensive. If I go it has to be CHEAP...so how much is a realistic amount to allow for a single night, with just a one man tent with no electric etc??

We've paid between 6 and 20 euro's depending on the campsite. off season for two.
Below are a few links to get an idea. Last one has also got municipal campsites.

the cheapest I paid this summer was 2.70 euros for one man, one tent and the dearest was 19 euros. Municipal camps are the ones to go for and cost less than 10 euros per night.

20 euros!! ...hmm...i'll need to be avoiding those then.

Maybe it's me but I cant find any municipal campsites on those links. I had already been looking.
Isnt there a simple Paper map with municipal sites marked somewhere?

I paid between three and twelve euros and estimate the average to be around seven euros. I'm not aware of any comprehensive list of municipal campsites but they are very common and can be found near some very small towns/villages as well as the larger population centres. Some are very high quality and cheap some are mediocre and expensivish at around 10 euros. There's no means of predicting the quality of what you are going to get from the prices.

You need to get the michelan camping france guide that lists the municipal sites

Almost every town has one or more and after august you should be ok just turning up

3 (north, municipal and 1*) to 25 (south by the sea and 5*) euros - almost inversly proportional to the product of the distance to nearest coast and distance from San Tropez
