But if a garment was knocked out in a far east sweatshop for a tenner, it would change hands a few times before being displayed at £80 inc VAT.
How else could they knock 50% off in the sales and still turn a profit?

If you run a business you need to understand the costs involved, that is why I asked the question, it is one I would have asked her.

£70 margin per hour is not good if your running costs are £80 per hour.

Not just the clothing, there's massive mark up on all cycling gear.
Carbon frame cost to a big brand £10 probably sell for £1000.
I know someone who imports garage equipment directly from China and the cost prices are ridiculously low.
But that's capitalism for you.

Walmart supposedly work 30 days out of every 31 before they turn a profit. My last business in London used to work out 25 days for costs and give for my wages.

Turnover for vanity, profit for sanity.

Why do you not do the same? As tool importing and distribution makes up a good part of my income I can assure you it is not easy.

That doesn't justify good value to the end consumer.

Blame the middle men companies like she worked for ... they generally cream off the best profit.

I guess my answer to the original question is "No" it's not worth the money for high end stuff, but does that ever stop us?

if you're patient and stingy and keep an eye out you can pick up decent stuff on clearance, the top dollar stuff is like a lot of other sports and activity, what the traffic will bear, fishing is the same, you can spend as much as you want to on anything

There is something in what you say, however if kit is more expensive it does tend to be better quality. That said, I would buy Castelli but I wouldn't pay stupid money for Rapha or Team sky kit.
