I have dodgy hearing and a mind that likes to wander - a combination that has led to me being startled out of my socks too many times to mention. The benefit of going clipless is that when I levitate with fright, at least the bike comes with me.

I always carry with me two half coconut shells in order to make a clip clop sound. In that way the horse doesn't perceive you as a threat. Its a bit hard to do whilst maintaining control of the bicycle but with practice it can be done. Honest.

OT, wilst out cycling yesterday, I had a very similar sound (but metalic) come up very quickly behind me, sounded just like a horse galloping. Eventually a clapped out fiesta came passed with its exhaust system hanging off, but it was not dragging along the floor, it was bouncing up and down sounding just like horse shoes on tarmac. I was confused as anything until it finally came passed!
