In a similar vein, a mate of mine was a diesel fitter for Mothercare...
I asked 'how does that work then ?'
He told me..'i hold up the clothes to the girls and say..'diesel fitter'.
A persistent 'petrol' smell is not uncommon in people with sinus problems (I get it sometimes). Depending on your age, persistent 'phantom' smells can also be an early warning sign (but not necessarily indicative of) certain neurological disorders.
On the sinus problem, I knew someone who went to a consultant who, in turn, recommended cutting out coffee. In his case, it worked but he hated his coffee-free life. I was wondering whether either you and/or @Crackle were regular caffeinistas and had tried this.

I like a nice coffee but don't drink much, only one tall cup in the morning and not much recently. Not sure I could completely give it up, even for a petrol smell.
