Helmet threads never work. They always go the same way.

1. Hi, I'm pro/anti helmet.
2. You're wrong. Here's proof why.
3. That's not proof. Here proof that disproves your proof.
4. No, your disproof is wrong, here is why: proof.
5. I disagree because of this anecdote which common sense makes proof.
6. No, common sense says your anecdote is disproved by my anecdote.
7. You're a d@&£
8. No, you're a d@&£
9. Admin locks thread.

Perhaps by this stage we should just all agree that there's never going to be a winner.

Not at all. I have known people to be convinced by the facts and to change their mind. There is certainly a tendency for all discussions like this to entrench the two sides. I do not think that is a good reason to leave contentious subjects alone. The different sides are exposed to the arguments of the other, and if they have any intellectual integrity this can only be a learning process.
I sometimes have the unworthy suspicion that trying to suppress discussion is a way of avoiding exposure to unwelcome truth.

If we were drivers, there would be a reason argued that not wearing seat belts would be safer. Wear one if you want, dont if you dont. Personally I wouldnt mind if it was made law, but then some would.^_^

Drivers not wearing seat belts would be safer for us, and no more dangerous for drivers. The long running campaign to make driving foolproof has produced more fools in charge of cars.

Each to their own.

I always wear a cricket box in case i stop too quickly and whack my plums on the stem, thus reducing the chance of any offspring, and saving a nurse a grisly job of inspecting and maybe bandaging them, but i may be playing a bit safe.

Tell you what, you get a campaign to make helmets compulsory in cars going and then we'll talk about it some more. Deal?
