I don't see the flaw if it's working and they're all nice people. There is no flaw - hurrah!!!!

I don't think they're nice people Wigo; I was quoting Marinyork albeit without quotation marks.
I think they're all a misguided bunch of power crazy meglamaniacs who get an orgasm every time they ban someone.

I'm interested to know what you mean by misbehaving? Do you think anyone abused their power, or do you just mean that mods, in their normal forum guises, expressed personal opinions?

We are all forummers too, and entitled to act as indivuduals within the rules. If any of us are embroiled in a thread, we will declare interests (anyway, it'll be obvious) and keep out of decisions.

Yes. I think two of the mods wound Peanut up a bit too much, were rude and deliberately baiting him and I thought it was out of order. This happened on several threads. As we don't have a system of saying what is mod and not there is no way to tell but I certainly read some of the comments very much along the lines of being moderator talk. One tends to get the same people joining in anyway mods or not. I don't particularly mind if it wasn't moderator talk, one reading is they can be as rude as they like outside of being a moderator, they are after all forumers. Plenty of other people say some really nasty things on here and the people themselves don't seem too upset, I'm all for light touch. So what do I know?

An alternative reading is that mods are not perfect, are forumers but they know how the place works. They should know better/have slightly better standards than others. I think this was the case, as they joined in taking the piss out of peanut. Shame really in some ways I thought it was quite an interesting thread. Peanut always was angry and liable to lose his temper, he was like that from day 1. We've all been there and done that, made mistakes and learned to get on. Peanut wasn't a new member that turned up and started causing trouble. He was all right, quite helpful in some ways, difficult to deal with yes but there was enough experience that some of the recent things said, people really should have known better. All right it's not especially surprising and you can't judge that harshly, but I think people really should have known better. The forum seems to be unable to deal with Joe/Peanut/Bonjs and there will be more in the future. There will of course be people that will say it is not the forum that is the problem but peanut/etc/etc having a problem themselves and flouncing off into nirvana and good riddance. I'm not so sure, I think some of the people we've lost/wound up/chastened are potentially very useful.

With the new guidelines in place I think my comments are even more on the mark though. I thought the general consensus was that outside places like commuting and P&L that slugged it out to the death that some of the other places should get a bit lighter, friendlier or without the unhelpfulness e.g. Know How, beginners and in this case bikes, accessories, kit and clothing. All right, we don't all manage it but it's something to strive for. Even the cafe has had a bit of a clearing out of the male gym changing rooms and all the sexist jokes/smut. I don't particularly mind what people want as long as it is clear and things aren't changed too radically.

What about the Mods taking a day off?

Would it work? Would chaos reign supreme? Would we get to buy food supplements? Would we end up with a mass punch up? Would we have smut everywhere? Would we all profess undying love for one another? Would Joe sneak back in under another name?

I don't think that's particularly fair. (I presume it's aimed at Noodley and me.) All we did was express our opinions, followed by Peanut hitting the roof for no apparent reason. He behaved in much the same way on the End to End relay thread. I (and Noodley, as far as I could see) made a point of not being rude to him; if you read the threads back you'll see that.

Selecting a moderator is something that should not be done lightly. A mod's powers are quite wide rangeing (I would think), so selecting someone just because they are a bit or even a lot contentious, just for fun is not a good idea. Shaun and the mods that oversee this forum do a very god job and I for one would not want to see them replaced just to satisfy someone's ego. Yes some the mods may have got a bit out of hand in some threads but I am sure Shaun sent them a PM to remind them of thier responsabilties as mods and forummers.

none of us consider ourselves above anybody else, neither are we infallible. if an honest mistake is made it's rectified.

a fairly important rule of thumb is not to moderate a thread in which you have actively posted. so if any mod is having a ding-dong arguement in p&l, it's not as a mod but as a regular forummer.
