A portable tool kit, pump and puncture repair kit so you can fix stuff on the go and always get yourself home.

Yup... As above, Puncture repair kit & a spare innertube + pump! (but I do carry slightly more than that tbh!)

for me, padded shorts but not essential for all

Multi tool, pump and patch kit. Obviously lights are important if travelling in poor light and I use them at all times anyway because I like people to see me.

In winter, gloves are just normal but gloves or mitts are essential safety kit. In the event of a slide you will almost certainly drag your hands along the road. They heal slowly and painfully.

Apart from all the obvious stuff, good idea to carry an identity card as well.
