Ok, so i currently commute 15 miles a day (7.5 each way) i now wish to increase this to 30 or 40 in total and have worked out a couple routes one for 30 one for 40
i have the bike and feel it will cope fine and my school has a secure bike shed and plenty of spare lockers in the bike shed so that is all okay but the bits i am stuck on is as follows:
clothing and getting changed
food
school equipment

so i find i can get by with 1 pair of trousers and 1 shirt for a week and could cycle in with these somehow on the monday and take the dirty stuff home on friday and leave the clean clothes in school, as for this sort of mileage i don't really want to be riding in in my school clothes as i currently do. would it be wise and/or practical to leave my school clothes in school ride in in lycra and then get changed in the toilets at the beginning and end of each day?

so then food is massively important for me as over 30-40 miles a day i will be burning about 1500-2000 calories i would estimate and as it stands we can't afford for me and both bro's to eat in the canteen every day and of course we couldn't do this just for me. could i get a saddle bag big enough to fit 3 sandwiches a banana an apple or two and a cereal bar in?

and finally school gear; i could leave my rucksack in school and chuck a pen or pencil etc in my jersey pocket when need be and i never get homework so that is no problem but it is mainly my school netbook that i am currently typing this on. at home i charge it overnight every night (i know, i know!) so it is fully charged for next day, i will be asking IT technicians tomorrow if i could charge it in their office or alternatively i could simply charge it as i use it in lessons as there is almost always more than enough sockets. anything i have majorly overlooked here or anywhere else?

if you have managed to get this far then well done! i greatly appreciate it!

question with panniers is, it it really very important to roughly distribute the weight(considering my school bag fully laden only weighs about 5 kg max i would say maybe not even that)? if so how would i go about this? would i put half my stuff in each pannier loose and then stick it all in my bag?

Nah - I just fling all my stuff in one pannier usually. Only bust the second one out when heading to the supermarket for a big shop (and when I inevitably forget to do this I stuff everything heavy into one pannier and bungee everything squishable to the rack....)

The joys of trying to post when kids are screaming at you to do some thing :becool:
Have you really thought about what you need to carry and where your going to store it .
Panniers mean you can carry more without worrying where to leave things at school .
For the sort of mileage you intend have you considered changing /shower facilities, wt weather gear , tools etc and where to carry your food you will need as i doubt a few sarnies and a few bits of fruit will cover you energy needs as you dont want to be having low energy levels to much in class as it can affect your concentration affecting your work .

Me too, and if I have to put loads of heavy stuff in one pannier I soon get the balance right once I get moving.

1 shirt for a week. Skanky.
i don't sweat much and shower every evening and could bring a towel and some baby wipes to school if need be. in any case it is a polo t-shirt and no physically demanding work is done in it

yes i need computer, pen, pencil, ruler, rubber and lunch. there i just thought about it! and i will carry it in a rucksack around school and then in a pannier to and from school
tools can go in a small saddle bagwet weather gear is exactly the same as dry weather gear, trust me i have done it many times before and i just dry quickly in a dry, warm classroom.
Can u not have School dinners, one less thing to worry about carrying.
can't afford it, as in OP (not 5 pence like it used to be!)

Ed, it's skanky. Sweat much, you aren't trying. We force my 13 year old to change shirt every day and shower and use deo. He rides a few miles each day. New shirt or the girlz will run

to start with i always ride just in my jersey with school shirt stuffed in bag (no need to tell me this will crease it, make it dirty bla bla bla)

i know many people both my family and friends who wear one maybe 2 shirts a week

i can't wear deodorant

and i'm not trying to pull any girls or boys being a-sexual (not interested in anyone) and i don't have any real friends in school as it is and don't feel a need to

always welcome to random strangers i have never met giving me an up-bringing over the internet!
