I went out yeaterday and did 23miles. I was well layered up but felt the cold all the way round. In the end I was not enjoying the ride and just went through the motions for fitness sake. I should have done a club run today, but could not stomach the thought of been out in the cold all day.
I've read somewhere that for oldies like me breathing hard in freezing weather could bring on a stroke or heart attack. How true that is I don't know. Just been out for a gentle 3 mile run though and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Did the same, out for four hours in freezing wind, bring on the summer.

Not bring on exactly, but it doesn't help IIRC. It also makes my asthma noticeable when it isn't usually, which is another reason I don't hammer it in the cold.

4-7 degrees, with a cool east wind today. 30 mile day trip, plus ten to/from the rendezvous. Polar fleece jacket, thermal tights under winter trousers, but had to remove liner gloves and open jacket to keep cool. Glorious sunshine, giving beautiful sea views as we scooted along the hilltops, which you might be able to see in the KLWNBUG Facebook group if so inclined. Definitely not pushing it, average 10mph yet again

I really struggled when breathing in cold air in the months following my first pulmonary embolism. I still don't like it, but at least I don't feel like it is going to put me back in hospital now. Oh, and I make sure that my legs are protected from the cold because my damaged veins are already potential clot sites so I don't want the cold increasing that risk. (BTW - I saw a young rider out in shorts today. It was about 5 degrees with a lot of windchill!)

Cold blood clots more easily than warm blood so possibly there is some truth in the notion that people are more likely to suffer a stroke or heart attack in cold weather. I'll see if I can find corroboration ... Here you go!

Dr Gavin Donaldson - senior lecturer in respiratory medicine at University College London said:
As you get colder, your blood vessels constrict, increasing your blood pressure, That means there’s less capacity in your circulatory system, so fluid passes out of your blood and into the surrounding tissues. The result is that the factors in your blood that cause it to clot become more concentrated and, at the same time, the natural anticoagulants, which help prevent clots, leave your bloodstream. This all makes a heart attack or a stroke more likely.

What do you mean?
I'm guessing that there are a number of people on here that would like to be in your "predicament". Never know.......I suppose we might get in to the low 20's by August here!

Well, it's a lot harder to cool down in hot weather than it is to warm up in cold. Yes, I know the UK can get really cold, but at least you have the option of wearing more. On the hot days here, it can be impossible to keep cool sometimes, it drains energy out of you when cycling, and it also affects sleeping. That's why I look forward to our Winters, even though they're not as cold as I'd prefer (but I'm not going to digress into a discussion on human-induced climate change).

Since having angioplasty and stenting done eight years ago I've had to be more diligent in warming up when its cold, if I skimp on the warm up it usually results in some minor twinges during the first part of the ride.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
it was 5 degrees here so i went out with winter kit , 2 pairs of gloves , thermal socks and overshoes and apart from the core being toasty to the point of being over-warm my hands and feet were numb and stayed that way for a good hour after i got home.

That's another post-illness change that I have noticed in myself. I am much better in the second half of a ride than I am in the first hour or so.

Was your head warm enough? I read somewhere that if you let any part of your body get cold then your hands and feet will probably feel cold too! I think there might be something in that because my hands and feet normally feel the cold but haven't done since I started wearing the balaclava/skull cap combination.
