Well we have a classic case study for the softly, softly approach going on right now. Do you think it has worked? The 70's was the last decade of real discipline.

Hmmmm.

Chapeltown Riot, 1975
Notting Hill Carnival Riot 1976
Southall Riot 1979
Brixton Riot 1981

Couldn't help thinking that the reporter sounded like she'd had a glass or two herself!

Very disappointing to listen to though.

Excessive discipline no doubt does.

But no discipline at all creates hell for everyone.

Yes I agree. I hope that they manage to process all those they arrested quickly so that they visibly and publicly get the criminal records they deserve, within the remit of the criminal justice system. This is mindless, as that scintillating interview in the OP quite aptly demonstrates.

And your point?

Isn't it obvious? You claimed that the 1970s was the last decade of 'real discipline', yet there seems to have been plenty of disorder. Ergo, if you stand by your assertion about the 70s, there doesn't appear to be an obvious link between 'real discipline' and social order.

......is a good one.

I still think these are shopping sprees rather than riots. And I was amused by Hazel Blears going on about 'criminality'.

On a scale of 1 to 100 where would you place the ill effects of the riots - invasion of Iraq being 100, building of the M25 being 10 and parliamentary expenses being 1?

Ask the small business owners but certainly higher than the M25.
