I remember the riots of the 80's very well and old and cynical enough to say I've seen it all before. I recall the same noises being made by politicians, pressure groups and rioters back then as they are now.

Society may have moved on / changed in the last 30 years but when you scratch away the glossy facade human nature is exactly the same. Nothing is new in this world, it's just recycled by a different generation.
