The comment about helmet's in a car ... you wear a seat belt to help prevent those injuries and anyone getting in my car will wear a seat belt.if I'm not with the kids and someone chooses not to wear a helmet or use lights then that is up to them but like I said in the 1st post I'm promoting safety to my kids and don't want it undermining by someone riding with us.

What about the hi-viz? Mustn't forget that if you're going to insist on elfin safety. Or just stay in the house .... no that's dangerous too.

This is getting ridiculous now. The OP laid down the rules that he expects his mates to follow if they want to join him with his kids. Simple, easy to follow rules. It's totally their choice if they conform whilst with them. He doesn't say that he expects them to follow said rules when not with them, or not cycle at all without a helmet.

It's circumstantial whether it's illegal or not, or whether they feel that wearing a helmet is too much to ask.

It's like asking someone to remove their shoes when entering your house, or asking them not to swear or act in a certain way in front of the kids. You may not think there's a need to, but that's the rules that you adhere to or choose not to and leave.

Plain and simple in my mind.

Nope, I always skin my right knee (and elbow), but my left leg either twists or makes heavy contact with the frame of the bike!

The shin is a part of the anatomy found in the lower leg. It's prime function is to find cofee tables and other obstructions in the dark

Thudguard time....

Children are welcome to come round to play with my kids as long as they abide by a simple obvious rule

They must wear a Thudguard not just for their own safety but as my kids play with them I can't promote safety to them if people with us aren't abiding by it

I think that's more than fair isn't it

Didn't realise there was such an anti helmet brigade so why not tell the kids that go skateboarding scootering and bmxing not to wear any protection because it doesn't prevent any injuries and by some accounts could even be more harmful!!!its simple they are my rules people either stick to them or don't ride with us.

serious question @Retribution03 , if your kids wanted to ride their bikes without a helmet, Would you let them ride or ban them from cycling unless they do?
Just interested.

unfortunately there is & wouldn't matter how good an argument you put forward to show that they may help reduce serious head injury or worse as once people start making comments on thudguards & wearing helmets while in cars the chances of of making any reasonable argument for helmets actually being listened to is next to none.

at some point someone will tell you that helmet wearers are more likely to have accidents as opposed to none helmet wearers but I think given more people wear helmets that may explain why more helmet wearers are involved in accidents.

there will also be those who argue that wearing a helmet will increase the chances of being struck on the head simply because it makes the head area bigger, they will also not accept that you may still have been struck on the head regardless, only now you have more of a chance to walk away after the impact as opposed to being rolled away on a stretcher.

reasonable arguments just don't work.
bottom line, your friends want to join you riding your bikes, fine. You have every right to request that they follow a few simple rules, what if they don't want to? then let them ride by themselves.

After all they want to join YOUR group, your not asking to join there's & forcing them to wear helmets once you join.

your group, your rules!

I wish you, your friends & family have safe pleasant rides, may the wind be forever at your backs & keep the rubber sides down.

good luck

Just a though-experiment - if someone said "my friends can come cycling with me, but I insist they do not wear a helmet" - would you consider that equally reasonable?

Just leaving aside the emotion / argument / logic behind helmets for a moment
