My daughter picked out a camera she wanted, a Nikon S7000, in black, not gold. For whatever reason these (in black) appear to be sold out everywhere, I decided to try my luck in Leeds..

Out of stock everywhere, Jessop's, Curry's etc So I wandered into John Lewis in Victoria Gate in which is stunning. I quickly found the camera sales area and there it was, a Nikon S7000 display model that you could fanny about with. Even better, underneath in the glass fronted stock cabinet were 2 boxes containing said camera. Result!

The camera sales guy had a Canon polo shirt and a Canon camera around his neck, I asked him for help as he wasn't going to actually give me any, so busy was he fookin about with his camera. He said "Excuse me" and moved onto Mr Timewaster. Friggin 'ell, I knew he was time waster by tuning in for just 10 seconds, the sales guy carried on droning........2m away there was Bose sound salesman, I asked him if I could buy the Nikon S7000 camera, he said it wasn't his dept & he couldn't help, same thing happened with the tablet sales guys, also 2m away. All the time the sales guy is droning on................and on........and missing all the time wasting signals.

After 15 mins Mr Timewaster goes away without buying anything, and super salesman goes back to fiddling with his camera, grrrr.

Me - I want to buy this camera.
Him - Well, let me show you this other.......
Me - No, I want this Nikon S7000.
Him - It's out of stock (I am sure he was happy about this).
Me - Well what are those there then.
Him - Well my pod show them out of stock.
Me - Well.......there they are, can I have one?
Him - Launches into drone about stock control.......
Me - Yeah but..............can I have the camera please?
Him - I'll write the number down and you have to take it to the till.
Me - Whatever, I just want to buy it.

Walks across shop floor to the till to a long queue.

Me - I'd like to buy this camera please.
Her - It's out of stock.
Me - No, it's in stock, there are 2 of them in them in the camera stock cabinet.
Her - Well my system says it is out of stock.
Me - Please just go see the camera guy and get me the Nikon S7000!

She goes away reluctantly, on her return.

Her - I can't find it, what cabinet are they in?
Me - WTF didn't the camera guy show you? (FFS they are under the S7000 display model, where would you look? Under mens underpants?)
Her - Can you show me?

I trudge back across the shopfloor, camera man is there doing FA apart from fiddling with his camera..

Him - I knew they'd say it was out of stock! (He said sagely.............)
Me to her - There they are!

We trudge back to the till.

Me - Why didn't the camera guy tell you where they were?
Her- I didn't ask him.
Me - Why couldn't he just give a camera anyway?
Her - He doesn't have a key to the cabinet.
Me - The camera sales guy doesn't have a key to the cabinet where the camera stock is held.
Her - No

Quite often the stores have a Company sales person in store, so this may have been a Canon employee doing Canon demos and sales, hence no interest in selling a non-Canon camera

Having said that there was a similar situation in Currys, but the salesperson was quite happy to advise my elders MiL that their product was too heavy, too complicated and the cheaper option across the aisle would suit her better

Similar to my experiences of shopping for electrical items at John Lewis.
After "tumble dryergate" I now go elsewhere.

Wrong side of the Pennines. The Manchester stores have staff that just can't be helpful enough. Having said that, at this time of year their customer service spirit must be wearing g a bit thin......

M&S Lincoln, useless service stand and watch the queues to pay for item and watch the customers just give up and hang the item on the nearest rack.

I keep hearing about these companies with supposedly superior customer service and have to say that I've never been lucky enough to experience it from any of them.
And I truly, truly detest the way that electrical shops now make you deal with one person to "buy" an item, then make you join a huge queue at a till elsewhere to pay for and then wait again to receive the blooming thing.

@MarkF you must have the patience of a saint not to have caused a fuss / demanded to speak to a manager after they way you were treated.
I hope your daughter appreciates the effort that went into getting her camera.

That said, when I bought my Lumix, I walked out of Currys* without one rather than waste any more of my life on the unhelpful nobber they employed to stop people buying them.

* - after this and two other similar incidents we now have a household policy of never buying ANYTHING from Currys PC World ever again, no matter how good a deal it looks.

I had a very similar experience with John Lewis in Ipswich when I went in to buy a £500 phone. The only salesman in the section ignored me for an obvious timewaster and after 10 minutes I wandered over to the checkout, said I knew exactly what I wanted and was there anyone around who could actually sell it to me?

The next step took 30 more minutes, involving several trips to a stock room because they didn't appear to have a stock control system of any kind and them getting the special offer price wrong twice. When eventually they admitted they had no stock, they told me I could pay now and they would get one in for the next day. I should have walked out but I paid, gave my card to the salesman, who did all the payment details, and I left with a receipt and in a distinctly foul mood.

What followed within twenty minutes was a bizarre set of cold calls from and with John Lewis (not my card company) asking for payment security checks that duplicated what the store salesman had done in taking my payment in-store, making me very suspicious and somewhat alarmed as to the calls' origin and what had happened in the store. It turned out that their systems do not differentiate between an order placed in store by staff and one placed online at home by a customer.
