I've definitely chosen routes with roads that looked safe enough but turned out to be horrible you just have to do what you can to feel safe which definitely includes forcing cars to recognise your presence. I tend to try different routes next time. I vaguely work on being comfortable if I can sit at at least 50% of the speed limit (assuming there are options) although with rural rides it's more choosing the roads that are at least a car and a half wide.

At the end of the day if I have to choose I ride selfish, cars are inconvenienced for seconds by my presence, they can get over it.

Also, from motorbike riding, you can be in the right and dead, you're still dead. So sometimes I'll settle for giving and swearing rather than pushing my rights. (i.e. Mercedes Sprinter trying to left hook me through the cycle lane on my Friday ride in)
