I love flower names.
One of my grandmothers was Ellen Rose and the other grandmother was named Lily. A flowery bunch!

Shaun Keavney on BBC 6music has had a thing recently... trying to find a Simon younger than 35ish years of age... his theory is no one has been christened Simon since the mid eighties. I guess the same goes for a lot of names that were common place in high school in that decade.

African naming traditions are interesting. Most Christian children will be given a traditional name and a Christian name, Olumide and Anthony for example. There's a huge variety of girls' virtue names like Grace and Patience and lots of boys are named after the day of the week they were born.

I have a customer whose name is Mike Thank-God. Mike is a dead ringer for Shrek except brown instead of green and with ears on the sides of his head but the same shape and huge smile. It's been suggested that after Mike was born the midwife asked his mother if she had a name and the poor woman gasped: "Thank God!"
