As long as I breathe, I attack.
back from the physio and he reckons i aggravated a micro tear in the cartilage and the rest and naproxen have calmed it down.It has really improved over the last week to the point i can ride out of the saddle with no pain and i was in half a min d whether to cancel the appointment but thought i had better go just to confirm i was ok.
Told it can take up to 3 months to settle down and to avoid out of the saddle intense efforts for a bit .

Just ordered a patella strap to see if it helps and started doing exercises to build inner quad strength as these were recommended last time i had knee pain for they knew it was a meniscus tear .

They can be deceptive, some pains showing at what is not the cause. I sense riding out of the saddle is better for the knee, there being less bend and thus less ieverage.

it didnt hurt as much sitting down and the initial pain came on suddenly out of the saddle and then gradually got worse till i couldnt ride at all , i guess it all down to where the damage was on the joint at the time , putting on shoes also hurt at the time .

Well, when hiking walking up hill it does not hurt so much either, pain usually showing up on the down section.

Much is RSI based. Spinning solved my knee issue moving it to a hip problem. I certainly caused my hip issues gearing too low.

Reminds me, a while ago I started experimenting to see if standing up on the bike was totally safe.
I forgot to continue the practice. It would certainly be useful for my fitness, my current ability in standing up duration being abysmal.

You would probably benefit from an e-bike to aid you in leg pressure for climbing hills, setting off from standstill and strong headwinds. You still get a great aerobic benefit, but without the stress.
