Mum bought a 2nd hand Brompton from an LBS a few months ago. Couple of weeks ago the gear shift cable snapped so she took it in and they diagnosed it, repaired it, and charged her £87

Fast forward a week, the cable snaps again. Mum took it back and they decided that their initial diagnosis wasn't correct (so the £87 was wasted) and a different repair was required.

Mum went into there yesterday. Bike was fine and repaired. Conversation went something like this:

LBS "There's your bike, the bill's attached"
Mum "I'm surprised you've billed me for this considering I've already paid £87 for a repair that wasn't required"
LBS "Well, you've got to pay the bill"
Mum "I'm not very happy about this"
LBS "You don't want to pay the bill do you?"
Mum "No I don't. But I will go to my car [parked outside] and get the money" [Mum picks up bike and walks out]
LBS "Put the bike down, if you go out to your car you're just going to drive off without paying"
Mum "Are you being serious? I'm walking out with the bike, putting it in the car, then I'm coming back in with your payment. Are you accusing me of being a thief?"
[she walks out, LBS walks out with her to make sure she doesn't drive off]
[comes back into the shop]
LBS "I'm sorry I said that, I'm having a bad day"
Mum "Yes, I'm sorry you said that too"
LBS "You know what, forget about this bill, you're right, you've already paid £87, that's enough"

Another customer lost to the local LBS

More to the point... 87 quid for a gear cable replacement? Serriously?

In addition to the gear cable replacement they also replaced the brakes. TBH, it was a bit garbled from my Mum, she's not clued up on bike maintenance.

She's 69 years old, doing a runner from the shop with the Brompton under her arm is a bit unilkely

LBS cannot compete with online sales , all they have left is repairs !

Dunno about this really, I'm sure there are quite a few people who would buy from their lbs to support them, sort of use it or lose it thing.
Obviously the lbs has higher overheads and smaller purchasing power than the online sellers but I think some use this as an excuse to hide lazy market research, poor pricing and lack of business sense.

I'll always try and buy at my lbs, even tried this nice new one that's opened up when I needed some new spd shoes, until I saw their 100% mark up above online prices and the fact they were selling above rrp. Same story with a lot of their other stock too.

I wouldn't mind paying a bit to support them, but I'm not gonna let them take the p1$$!

Without knowing what repairs were done it's impossible to comment on the bill for them. After that thought the attitude sounds just awful. Anyone can have a bad day but you have to have a bit more self control than that.
It takes me quite a long time, with a very awkward customer before I loose it. If I do loose my cool I count to ten and direct them to Halfords. I've only done this once and still felt bad about it.
