they used to be fantastically over engineered, they used to be something quite special about them, super reliable and just went on and on indefinitely. my wife had nothing else for about 25 years and they progressively got worse and worse, imho they're now no better than any think else on the road, would never have another, and the attitude from the dealers is just hideous.
IIRC, the engineering quality of Mercs took a dive around about the W124 time and the bodywork of the W210 was dire. It was during that period that the German taxi drivers staged their protests about the poor reliability of the cars. I believe that they got some of the engineering quality back after the W210 but they still seem to push out products with poor design / too little testing e.g. the common engine / auto box radiator on the W211 (pre 2004) that was a disaster (coolant leaked into the auto lubrication) and failing igniters on new engine types. .

Effortless and a tad scary I have found out.... 535d....goes like the proverbials!
I had one for a few years, and found it to be exactly as you describe. When I went to trade it in, I allowed myself to be talked into a 325, which was apparently the same engine just mapped slightly different. Never been more disappointed in a car in my life and sold it within the year and never driven one since.

There is nothing I hate more when cycling than being overtaken by a diesel car - cough splutter:evil:
I don't care what the manufacturers say, the modern ones still chuck out a lot of smoke when the driver floors it.

Yeah, nothing worse, except when you cycle through a low lying bit on a beautiful crisp morning, only to get a lung full of fumes from cars that passed 10 minutes ago.

I know you're only bonefishing, of course, but you will make progress undisturbed in the left lane too, when it's empty :okay:. At some point, you are going to have to move left to leave the motorway anyway, unless you can find one of the few exits from the right hand lane on UK motorways, e.g. Charing Cross, off the M8 westbound in Glasgow.
er, that's exactly what I was saying - leave the L3 thrusters to their thrusting and make just as rapid progress two lanes to their left. Piscatorially yours etc

Those large ships do not immediately impact me. The vehicles in the city where I live do immediately impact me.

New cars are fine, older cars that aren't well maintained need to be sorted out at some point, but trucks and taxis need to be sorted out pronto. But trucks and taxis and have large organisations behind them whereas the private motorist doesn't and therefore is an easy target.

Wth are these dumb politicians up to. First they tell us of low CO2 emissions, now they tell us of bad pollutants. On and on these tossers go. Changing their minds every 10-20 years, keeping the public on their toes, taxing us with what next, no body knows.

We need taxes, more of them would make things nicer for many.

As for the information, surely politicians are only passing on a message given to them by people who know better.

Thank goodness for that - a supertanker would smart something rotten.

Fly? Drive? Both are cheaper.
But I get your point; I thought we were supposed to be being encouraged to use the environmentally less unfriendly railways.
