Light advice

Any suggestions please- I've been out tonight at about 8pm and I was aware that my lights weren't much cop, but they were awful. They are a £30 catseye set.
So I'm after a decent front light, but on a budget as I need the same for my 16 year old lad who does 8 miles each way to 6th form.
I would say £50 max per light. Thanks for any help.

Are you after a light to be seen with or a light to see with, do you ride on lit or unlit roads? There are some fantastic lights out there at quite sensible prices now LED technology is getting more affordable.
