Looking for my first helmet, main preference is for is to be light and breathable, don't like a sweaty head and cannot tolerate anything heavy on my head. Will be going into to some shops to get the sizing correct, 59cm so borderline M/L on many models, today/tomorrow.

My initial impressions, like the look of the white variants of the Giro Foray, but feedback from you guys relating to the above would really help. Recommedations welcome. Also, is MIPS beneficial and/or necessary?

Thanks

Get one that fits and is comfortable, try and buy in store as you say. I must have tried at least 15 before finding a suitable one. Helmet choice including whether to wear one at all is very personal IMO

Definitely try on first, make sure it's fits.
When you find one you like maybe check out online reviews before you buy it.
I bought my first Scott helmet online and was very lucky comfort and fit wise, so I bought my next one also without trying and it's still a good fit but head gets more sweaty in this one :heat:

It took me years to find a helmet that was comfy, I finally found a Specalized Prevail, dead light, lots of vents and most importantly I hardly know its on. Not cheap but it worked for me. Maybe I've got a wierd shaped head. I also bought another one in case they discontinue or change it.

Same here, tried around 20 different ones. Finally found that the Giro Phase was the only one that felt right straight away. I've since found that the Catlike range fit well too, but I imagine buying helmets on line is quite a lottery unless you've tried some first.

Just bought a new helmet after my previous was damaged after headbutting the tarmac. Bougyt a Giant Rev helmet, tried a Giro with Mips on at the shop and it was uncomfortable. You definitely need to go try them on.

+1 for the Specialised Prevail, expensive at full price, I got it half price with a trade in your old helmet offer, it can be found cheaper than full price.

Weird shaped heads are another reason to try before buying

As with shoes, different companies have different shapes. Giro helmets I find tight on the sides, but Specialxed are OK. I could never get on with MET as they were tight on the forehead

Fit and comfort are the most imprtant factors. Firstly because if it is not comfortable then you will not wear in and secondly a poorly fitted helmet can increase injury

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I had a giro, but I didnt like it. Finally tried a prowell f59. Very light, lots of cut outs and doesn't make you too hot.

I found the kask vertigo to be the nicest helmet i have tried . Unfortunately they dont do it in a small size and the medium just looked stupid on me .
Shame they limit the size range .

I use a Kask Mojito, it looks alright and is nice and light. I tried on a few, the Specialised ones were tight on the sides of me head and I didn't like the Giro ones. Definitely try some on because everyones heads are different sizes.

Not 'necessary' in the sense that it is not legally required. Whether it is desirable is up to you. It adds to the cost while adding some safety features. Look at some videos on the technology and decide for yourself whether you feel it is worthwhile or not.
