On one hand I have had bottle rockets shot at me on a canal path.
On the other hand I let some girls through a cycle path barrier ahead of me today and they both said "thank you" very politely.

I should think carefully about reacting in that way to children/youths in future. If the situation had escalated you might have found yourself in a heap of trouble.

Yes but we shouldn't let people away with things like this otherwise they would all be at it. Some kids need taught respect and we shouldn't be afraid to go out for a cycle / walk. Giving these boys an earful might just make them think twice about doing something like that in future!

There appears to be a typo on your profile location then!
Renfrew's not so bad TBH, I lived there briefly a few years back when I got involved with a young lady who lived in Tanar Way. Was impossible trying to sleep though; it was like lying on the hard shoulder of the M8 at the Braehead junction. Her house couldn't have been any closer to the motorway .

I live nearer the Clyde, well away from the motorway! 10 minutes on the bike and I'm out in the countryside with hundreds of miles of roads to explore or jump over the erskine bridge & head towards Loch Lomond with endless amounts of routes to discover.

A women on her brand new MTB on Leeds-Bradford canal near Pudsey had stones thrown at her by three young males and then they nicked her bike, EBC put out an appeal over cycling clubs and then... Gave her a new bike (which was a uncollected prize, pretty good of them.

Kids are kids, I am sure they'd be horrified if you'd fallen.

I make steady eye contact with groups, if there is a "leader" I focus on him, being big also helps. Last summer a group of maybe 6 or 7 teenage lads saw me approaching, they moved from a wall right to the edge of the kerb, hmmmm. It was flat, I was doing maybe 15mph, as I approached one by one they started to move away from the kerb, as they saw how big I am. The leader didn't, he came out further, he was going to do "something", he was the top boy, I lifted my arm up, palm out, ear height. I meant to scare/warn him and withdraw it, he didn't flinch, but I misjudged.........................................clouted him right in the ear leaving him sprawled on the floor. ^_^

The Kirskstall canal area is notorious for teenage gits. Grabbing and pouring away their fun soon dampens their spirits.

Now the A65 improvements have been made I wouldnt touch that canal as a commuter route, bus's in the lane are surprisingly well behaved and at peak times they don't have chance to pass anyway.

The canal is earmarked for improvements as part of the 'Superhighway' scheme, I'm going to ask if those plans include lighting and CCTV as a lot of the issues I think are caused because despite its urban location its actually quite isolated.

Oh, I use the canal, what improvements?

The kids don't bother me, but at Kirsktall they can get up to no good and have easy escape routes, Rodley is the next git hangout, everywhere else, Leeds To Skipton is very safe IMO.

Was shot in the chest by 4 kids with an air pistol near Cambridge. Hurt a fair bit and left a nasty bruise, damn lucky it was the chest though as anywhere in the face could have been very nasty. It felt worse because it was a busy cycle route used by parents with children too. Reported it to the police and they said there was a traveller community near that spot well known for similar incidents, but without any positive id etc there was nothing they could do.

Thats all I have for now but to save you digging through 99 pages, its going to be resurfaced from Armley to Shipley. Left a message with my club if anyone has more info as they've been quite involved with the scheme as a whole.

I'm not in Leeds now but when I was occasionally I'd see the little cherubs out and about, swimming in Locks seemed to be popular although if anything was thrown at me I didn't notice as it missed!

EDIT

Within minutes, here you go:

"Tarmac or similar std bonded gravel from Leeds to Shipley, work starts soon aim to complete before Le Tour, will be unavoidable closures."

Many thanks. That is fantastic news, I've seen bods collecting information on the canal, ticking off passing cyclists, they said that they were assessing towpath traffic and sections might be closed for the TDF. That would have put a dampner on my plans.
