Hi all,

Looking to get a towbar fitted to our car so that I can fit a 2 bike rear carrier. Just wondering if anybody has any recommendations regarding a suitable carrier please.

NB each bike weighs around 25kg.

Many thanks for any input...

I have a Thule, 2 bike tow-bar carrier. It has been extensively used (taking bicycles to France, Spain, Italy for example). Perfectly happy with it.

I would add, our current bicycles (2 * Specialised Turbo 4 SL e-bikes) are approx 15kg each. Previously we had 2 * 12kg Giant. Hybrids).

I would check your tow-bar nose weight limit, for 2*25kg.

I have got one very similar to, but not identical to the above. It carried two ebikes (about 44 kilos total weight as the batteries were removed and carried in the vehicle) all round Europe and UK on the back of our campervan with no dramas whatsoever.
I have sold the van but kept the bike rack to use with my current car.

The only "modification" I made was to buy two extra straps from Halfords. They had gutter hooks on one end and were plain at the other end. Once the carrier is on the vehicle, and the bikes are secured to the carrier, I hook the gutter hooks over the top of the rear van doors and just tie them to the bikes, as a kind of "insurance" against the whole issue slipping down and possibly hitting the road. But, hand on heart, we have never had any problem with carrying two ebikes on our carrier. I believe ours is rated for up to 55 kilos.

I hope this helps.....

If you have a proper steel framed towbar fitted, I wouldn't worry myself about weights. These things are designed to take the toing and froing of a caravan weighing several hundred kilos. Two bikes and tow bar weigh far less than a average adult sat in the back, so nose weight not critical either

Thule have a good reputation, its all down to how you want to secure the bikes on the carrier, by the frame or by the wheels

I've had a Buzz rack, a wheel support type, sourced from the Roofbox Company for the last 6 years. It's transported bikes all over Europe and the UK with no problems at all. Mine is only rated for bikes up to 15kgs each, but I see that they now do an e-bike version. They are very competitively priced and in my experience very robust. It looks as if new stock is expected in February.

I have a Thule towball mounted 2 bike carrier (sorry, I don't have the model number to hand). Very happy with it, but the bikes I've used it with are not lightweight but they are less than 25kg apiece. Maybe 30-35 put together.

So I'd have a good read of the manufacturer's blurb before buying anything.
