I assume we all rate the modern bicycle as one of man's greatest inventions, but what of other more mundane everyday things that have elegant simplicity and perform beautifully.

I was pondering this wider question as I used one of my favourite of man-made designs...

I guess it's the Safety bicycle and onwards that I was thinking of, the direct ancestor of our present designs...

2 and 3 are good...but the atom-bomb is not very "every-day" in the way that the Stanley-knife and Velcro are...
